I’ve been busy with getting the upgrade of our Projects website (http://projects.blender.org) working properly. As you may know, our current site is severely limited in its usefulness for user, especially when it comes to searching for and reporting of bugs. A combination of old software and a bad database forced us to close down some of the areas, put them behind login. This is not very nice for the user (neither for the developer), and one of the symptoms is a lot of duplicate reports.

For a looooong time I’ve been working on different forms of an improved website. I tried Redmine for a while, but it became apparent that it is absolutely not suitable for our needs: lots of users (14k+ registered users), lots of reports (for Blender close to 10k). This is pure suicide for a server running Redmine. Some other things were tried as well (I had even a simple, working bug tracker implemented in Lua on top of Sputnik with all projects and artifacts imported, but maintaining that would’ve been too time consuming).

So after a long time we decided to go for a FusionForge upgrade. This also floated around for a long while, so a few weeks ago I put myself to finally, properly do this. A lot of effort has gone into getting the database upgraded, the software upgraded and customised for our needs. I’m glad that the end is in sight, but before it’s online I give you a short overview of what the upgraded site will look like. Note that I still work style and layout issues, but as a functional tool it shows already what it can (ignore jesterPrincess giving her opinion at some point in the screencast)

This week I’ve fixed 4 bugs and closed several more reports. Most of the time went into checking the tracker and commenting. I’ve applied two COLLADA patches, one by Martijn Berger and one from Wenzel Jakob.

I uploaded my SVN+Git tutorial to YouTube, the text for the tutorial will be in our wiki soon. I’ve made a start with changing wiki pages and reorganising the Development section of the main website, moving content to our wiki for easier maintenance by not only me, but others as well.

I’ve taken some time to work on the GForge migration too, which is going pretty nicely. Still some database issues that I’m figuring out, hopefully next week I’ll have some more time to put into this.

Next monday I’ll most likely be not much active, as I’ll be on a trip to Helsinki for some pretty exciting stuff. I hope I can blog about that before the end of the year. If I have a properly working mobile connection, I’ll work from the train, otherwise I’ll do the hours over the course of the entire week.

So, a quick status update from last week. During the begin of the week I was busy with fixing up our installer script, so that it won’t delete everything without properly warning and so on. After that I did release log work, some SVN and tracker stats for the period Blender 2.54-Blender 2.55. On Thursday I travelled to the Netherlands or the Blender Conference 2010, so I haven’t been able to do much sensible on the bug tracker or related work. On next Tuesday I’ll probably will finally press the release button on 2.55. I hope the users can wait for a few more moments before they can download a new official release

During the conference I’ve been busy helping out speakers and having two short sessions myself too, with on Saturday one on bug reporting and feature proposals. I hope users now have a better picture of how they can be a part of our development process.

Today only a few numbers, as I need to make some small adjustments to be able to do sensible data gathering from the tracker since the new release, but that’ll have to wait for a few more days. Anyway, the useful numbers:

During last 24 hours 9 reports were closed
During last seven days 67 reports were closed, avg 9.57 per day
During last 30 days 396 reports were closed, avg 13.20 per day
During last 24 hours 9 new issues were reported
During last seven days 74 new issues were reported, avg 10.57 per day
During last 30 days 336 new issues were reported, avg 11.20 per day

So you see, in the last seven days slightly more bugs reported than we closed, but that’s mainly due to the fact that I’ve been concentrating a bit more on non-bugfixing tasks. That said, I’m sure we’ll be well below 200 again next week. (One can at least hope )

Last week I’ve been working on GHOST issues on Windows, fixing problems with modifier keys, some of them because I did some improper checks on what is used where. Shift+numpad keys are still a problem, but I’ll continue working on finding a solution for this.

COLLADA issues I moved to the todo list, because I need to concentrate on other issues (bugfixes, release logs, docs) too. If there are developers out there who want to contribute to our COLLADA code, I’ll be happy to coordinate their efforts, review their patches and apply them to our trunk.

Apart from bugfixing I did also some cleaning of the code, specifically GHOST and blenkernel are now warning free. We’ve enabled /WX and -Werror for these parts, so any warnings there should be caught pretty soon. Because not all developers work on all platforms it’ll mean an increased amount of “Does Not Compile” messages to our mailing list, but I think that’s OK.

As of this writing we’re on 195 open reports, with since 2.54 beta a total of 718 closed and 522 newly opened reports. As you can see, we do make progress still

Last week has been a bit of a hassle. Tuesday and wednesday I was out of development a lot, since I did some rebuilding of my ‘wardrobe’. I use an Ikea wardrobe to house my machines, but they stood there just as machines. Airflow was less than optimal, so I had to keep one door always open. I decided to do something about it. I removed the big plank in the middle and put a Elfa organiser system in place. I removed the casings from my computers and put the componenst into the organiser system. For cooling I got 4 large Noctua fans. The wardrobe is now much cooler, I can even leave the doors closed for long times. The system is not finished by a long shot. I still need to saw some good air vents at the top of the thing for outlet, and at the bottom for intake. Then install the fans properly, install silencer mats and so on. After that I’ve been working hard on getting back on track with time usage.

I’ve been working on COLLADA bugs that I thought would be quick to fix. It might have been quick, but I didn’t like the simple fixes, so I took time to devise a way for doing light export ‘properly’. I’ve been in contact with the author of Mitsuba renderer project (Jakob Wenzel) about the issue, and I think that the current way of doing export and import is now much better. Similar issues arise with camera export and import and so on – I continue working on them.

For Windows there was a difficult task in figuring out and fixing the problem of AltGr input in Text editor and Console editor.

Saturday I’ve added a simple version of the System Info script we used to have in 2.4x series. This can now be used by users to get good system info to be used in bug reports (the AltGr-problem became apparent when I tried scripting in Blender for this).

Last week I did 27 commits of which 7 were fixes. I closed 20 reports and I commented of a whole lot more.

Because of the AltGr-problem I put writing the graph scripts back (I use blender text editor exclusively for any Python 3.1.2 code, since it’s the only Python 3.1.2 interpreter I have on my system – ok, I admin, I do use gvim too when scripting in Blender), so the graphs look still unfinished, but here’s the pictures and numbers:

And again, a day or two too late! I’ll just pretend that good things are worth waiting for.

Last week has again been full of bug fixing. Since much of the easy bugs has been handled, it is going to show in our closing speed as reports need more and more time to investigate and verify. That doesn’t mean we stop working of course, on the contrary. Last week I closed over 40 reports. This includes the reports that we mark as todo on our wiki todo list. A lot of time went also in investigating new (and old) reports and getting more information for those.

People have been asking me how we handle bug reports. For Blender 2.5x series we use the Blender 2.5 Bug Tracker (which is still behind log in) with bugs set to data type Blender 2.5 Bug Tracker.

In our tracker we have the following states for Resolution: None, New, Investigate, Ready (rare, prestage for Fixed), Approved, Rejected, Postponed (unused), Fixed, Duplicate and Todo.

When a new report is submitted the report is None, sometimes the user sets to New, either way is OK. The next step is for a dedicated developer to do a first assessment of the report. The idea of the triaging is that the developer tries to determine if it’s a valid report and if so, assign it to a developer who can handle the bug (code owner, module owner). The bug will be assigned and set to New, or if the triaging developer is certain, Approved. If a report is not valid, the report is marked Rejected and State is set to Closed. An invalid report is often:

misunderstanding of how a feature works

a user not aware of some feature

something that didn’t work like a user expected, but was designed or implemented in that way

Either the triaging or assigned developer can set Resolution to Investigate, although this is not often used by all developers. I like to put it on Investigate to signal the reporter and interested parties that the issue is being looked at. When a bug is fixed the assignee sets Resolution to Fixed and State to Closed. This we do mostly on basis of testing by developer, who might or might not have asked other developers to test. This depends on the complexity of the issue. Only if the reporter notices that an issue hasn’t been fixed properly is a Fixed and Closed report reopened.

If similar reports have been reported before it is marked as Duplicated and set their State to Closed. We try to put in comments of both the duplicate and original bug links to the other report, so all can be verified when a fix is found.

To help us manage the influx of bugs we’ve decided to keep in the bug tracker only reports that are actual bugs to our standards. A bug is something that is intended (code and design) to work, but doesn’t.

Reports can be marked also as Todo and moved to the todo wiki. In that case reports are closed too. Reports eligable for move are often related to features that haven’t been fully implemented (or at all). Also reports of recurring issues that we have trouble finding good solutions for in a short timespan can be moved to this todo page. An example is several OpenGL problems that can happen on some cards, but also some larger tasks that can take some time and need someone to sit down and actually do it. The todo list is for both old developers and for those who want to start working on Blender code. The bug tracker is a good place, of course, but our todo page will contain sections that can have links to the bug tracker, and are thus easier to oversee for developers. Right now the todo list is in many places just bunch of bullet lists, but I intend to write out more details for as many sections as possible in the coming time as part of my role for Development Support, along with coder documentation on what to do, how, where, etc.

The rules are not enforced, but it would be benificial if both users and developers followed the rules as much as possible. It’ll help me and others in handling the bugs and quickly respond to changes and new ones.

I hope this short overview helps users and developers in understanding how our process works.

Enough of the boring stuff, let’s have some diagrams and numbers of the current development progress:

I also worked on the release logs, reading through 5000 lines of svn log. With the imminent release of Blender 2.54 we’ll have a good basis to work from, both statistically and in terms of stabilizing and finalizing Blender, to pull out of the Beta stage.

Now for some stats and graphs:

Exciting news! From September 2010 on Blender Foundation will be a customer for me for a calendar period of 7 months, making the (part-time) contract last until end of March 2011

I’ll be working on the bug tracker and on documentation (two of the things probably considered least sexy), to get Blender 2.5 finally out of the beta stage. I’m honoured that the Blender Foundation wants focused effort from me in this way.

I hope I can do make a good impact on the bug count in our tracker and supporting other developers in stabilizing the codebase.

Rest assured, with all the current work I have (and for which I’m grateful: realxtend.org and blender.org), I’ll continue to work on and provide Planet Blender and Blenderstorm.

Enjoy your Blender!
/Nathan

We’ve been working for http://www.renderfarm.fi to get the uploader script in good usable state with some nice improvements. See this blog over at http://www.renderfarm.fi for the info.

I added the frontend part for session managent of users, so after upload you can follow your session progress through Blender using the uploader script (Renderfarm.fi in the Renderer dropdown).

Also a set of UI improvements were done, as well as improvements to the communication with the backend server handling the submissions.

Renderfarm.fi now thus supports Blender 2.5a2, and I’m sure we’ll be supporting the imminent Blender 2.5 beta too.

All in all I think the service has been improved a lot, and you should find it a very useful way to get those long renders done much faster

Enjoy!

As you may know I’m active in the Renderfarm.fi project, for which I’ve been working on the uploader script. This script allows you to easily send in your work, and to follow the progress of your sessions.

I think that the Renderfarm.fi project is a very interesting project for Blender users (and during summer another renderer should be integrated – more on that in due time), since it allows users to send in their scenes that may take a long time to finish on their own machine(s). Having the growing group of rendering clients from Renderfarm.fi is just what you need then.

I also like to put my idle CPU cycles to use for the project. I have a very own team of crunchers called jesterKing Crunchers who like to run the Renderfarm.fi BOINC client.

If you’re interested in donating your free CPU cycles for others to use, please consider joining my team jesterKing Crunchers! The aim is to become one of the largest and best teams on Renderfarm.fi!

So, the holidays are over. For me it was a time of very little internet usage and little activity in Blender channels. But now I give you Blender 2.5 r25772 builds for both 32bit and 64bit Windows.

It’s been only a few weeks since my previous builds, but between that post and this there have been over 300 commits. Please refer to the commit logs to see what has been changed, added, removed.

As always, the packages are self-extracting 7z-archives (you can still use your locally installed 7z if you are so inclined – just right-click on the archive and choose the proper action from the 7z context menu), and scanned for viruses with AVG Anti-Virus 9.0.725.

Blender 2.5 r25772, Windows, 32bit

Blender 2.5 r25772, Windows, 64bit

As interesting extra information: I have now bought Windows 7 Ultimate retail, and the install went smooth. At least my Blender development and build environment is up and running! Although I’ve got this covered now, you are still free to donate (I’d like to be able to get the next Visual Studio when it comes out, for instance). Check the Blender Development page elsewhere on my blog.

At any rate, enjoy these new builds!
