It’s been way too long since my previous update, so here finally a new update. So, what have I been doing all this time?

Well, mostly I’ve been working on developer documentation. It’s been quite a boring task, and as some sort of poor excuse, it’s been uninviting enough to “forget” about the status reports. Anyway, I’ve been shuffling content on the wiki to some extent, creating for the development contents section a new and clearer start page that should help decide and point viewers to the correct place. Three big links which go to building blender, developing blender and contacting the developers. Further some content got reorganised from different places into the wiki (from the www.blender.org typo site). There are still some redirect issues left with some of the links, but these Typo3 issues will hopefully addressed when we get an upgrade to Typo4; at least my attempts to fix those redirects haven’t been very successful. An extra reload in the browser by the user is needed to have the redirect work OK. A similar link collection I’ve created on projects.blender.org to help visitors (potential bug reporters and developers) quickly find our patch and bug trackers.

Apart from wiki work, which will continue of course, I’ve been doing the past few weeks lots of doxygen work. After testing in a few modules I worked on a script to get all our code files tagged and grouped in a structure that resembles our source base. All in all around 2400 files have now been tagged and verified and committed for doxygen usage. Even with a script to help me out with modifying the codefiles it took a long time to go through all the code and have them checked. Anyway, for those who would like to have a nice, browsable introduction to our source code can check out doxygenified blendercode on my site. The current size of this all is 455MB, and that while not all possible doxygenifications have been done! If you don’t want to browse the code through my site you can download a 84MB CHM file: blender.chm. There are CHM viewers for Linux and OSX.

The plan is to write a blog post about the doxygenification on the Blender developer blog, outlining the plans for it in the (near) future.

During the last few weeks 2010 and begin of 2011 I also worked a while on COLLADA, setting up a 2-pass mechanism that I’ll continue working on now that this step doxygenification has been completed. I wrote code for both OpenCOLLADA and Blender to handle stride settings specified in the <accessor> tag for geometry data. The patch works very well for vertices, but needs to be improved a little so it can be used easily also for all other geometry reading (normals, texture coordinates, etc.). On windows this is already secretly built into the OpenCOLLADA lib, but I’ll finalize the code and submit it as a patch to the OpenCOLLADA trackers. For normal export I also received a small library by Morten Mikkelson to help with welding geometry and normal info before doing the actual writing to a COLLADA file.

I managed to do a few bug fixes during this period too, but my coding input has been low due to the documentation effort. I’m poised to get back to coding and bugfixing again! Tomorrow the first day of the last month of my contract with Blender Foundation starts, so we’ll set some nice targets to achieve during this month. Stay tuned.

I already wrote about my work for the last week in my previous blog, but I wanted to do this one still so I could also include some stats, that have been lacking for a few weeks. Note that this is a longer-than-usual stats message, so be sure to check out the SVN stats section and the fixed bugs -list.

As you can see, hour daily stats are starting to look very nice. Only three days during which more reports were opened than closed. The hourly stats also look a bit better than before, most hours creeping closer to the same amount of reporting as closing.

For the accumulated amounts per day we see that right after Blender 2.55 beta release we received more bugs than we fixed. After a good two weeks we finally managed to turn the tide, and it is evident that also Ton Roosendaal is participating in our bug fixing efforts. Finally!

I’ve been busy with getting the upgrade of our Projects website (http://projects.blender.org) working properly. As you may know, our current site is severely limited in its usefulness for user, especially when it comes to searching for and reporting of bugs. A combination of old software and a bad database forced us to close down some of the areas, put them behind login. This is not very nice for the user (neither for the developer), and one of the symptoms is a lot of duplicate reports.

For a looooong time I’ve been working on different forms of an improved website. I tried Redmine for a while, but it became apparent that it is absolutely not suitable for our needs: lots of users (14k+ registered users), lots of reports (for Blender close to 10k). This is pure suicide for a server running Redmine. Some other things were tried as well (I had even a simple, working bug tracker implemented in Lua on top of Sputnik with all projects and artifacts imported, but maintaining that would’ve been too time consuming).

So after a long time we decided to go for a FusionForge upgrade. This also floated around for a long while, so a few weeks ago I put myself to finally, properly do this. A lot of effort has gone into getting the database upgraded, the software upgraded and customised for our needs. I’m glad that the end is in sight, but before it’s online I give you a short overview of what the upgraded site will look like. Note that I still work style and layout issues, but as a functional tool it shows already what it can (ignore jesterPrincess giving her opinion at some point in the screencast)

My time on the bug tracker has been pretty minimal, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been active! I’ve started tagging pages on the wiki that I’m going to work on, or am already working on with the newly created {{Warning/Working/Development}} template. With this I can communicate to people that I’m working on those pages. I try to include a smart message about why I’m working on it. In the coming time you’ll see more updates on the wiki, with a steady convergance on a better structured content and less duplication. There are some wildly old pages on the wiki, that can be merged with newer documents, and so on.

Further I’ve been working on the upgrade for our beloved/infamous projects site https://projects.blender.org. This week I’ve been looking into getting the database into shape. Most of it now works, and after some cleanup I even managed to get the search time down from around 10 minutes to 1 second. A pretty cool speed-up if I may say. Next week I’ll continue with this work. There are still some issues with the upgrade that I need to weed out, before we have a properly working upgrade. Things that still go wrong are: activity_vw table not recreated, workflow not working, reporting seems to be non-functional and partly the bug tracker browsing does weird things. When the database upgrade is done we will have to check SVN integration and move the existing repositories to the new system.

This week I’ve fixed 4 bugs and closed several more reports. Most of the time went into checking the tracker and commenting. I’ve applied two COLLADA patches, one by Martijn Berger and one from Wenzel Jakob.

I uploaded my SVN+Git tutorial to YouTube, the text for the tutorial will be in our wiki soon. I’ve made a start with changing wiki pages and reorganising the Development section of the main website, moving content to our wiki for easier maintenance by not only me, but others as well.

I’ve taken some time to work on the GForge migration too, which is going pretty nicely. Still some database issues that I’m figuring out, hopefully next week I’ll have some more time to put into this.

Next monday I’ll most likely be not much active, as I’ll be on a trip to Helsinki for some pretty exciting stuff. I hope I can blog about that before the end of the year. If I have a properly working mobile connection, I’ll work from the train, otherwise I’ll do the hours over the course of the entire week.

Last week has been mostly about going over existing documentation and figuring out what to do with the organisation of the different places where we provide documentation. Currently we have a section on main www.blender.org, and a section under wiki.blender.org. This will be consolidated, having most of the content moved to the wiki, where it can be maintained better by all active developers.

For the developer documentation I’ve been writing a SVN+Git tutorial, recording a 20+ minute session explaining a simple workflow with this. More developer documentation on the codebase, development pipeline and so on will follow.

Tracker work has been on the slow side from my part, mostly commenting on reports and assigning to active developers; actually closing reports a grand total of 3.

From next week on I’ll be concentrating again more on the tracker, but also put in time for the documentation. The time division will be 50%-50% for the tasks.

Concluding with some stats:

----- total 14 bugs closed. New bugs for this day: 12
During last 14 days we had 9 days where we closed more than there were new reports opened
153 days when we closed more than there were opened (438 days with open activity, 399 days with close activity)
260 opened and 280 closed since 2.55 beta
116 fixed since 2.55 beta, 2229 since tracker birth

Already a huge amount of reports since 2.55 beta was released (and fortunately even more closed), but it is obvious that users do want to participate in improving Blender. It’s good to see Ton being in business again, too.

I’ll be adding some more stats, like amount of duplicate reports and rejected reports.

I still need to update the scripts to properly do axis for the graphs, otherwise they don’t make that much sense (although they do give some sense of the progress).

As per recent tradition, this update is late too. There are not many interesting things to tell though. Most of the time went into handling Blender 2.55 release. Much of it behind the scenes with trying to solve issues with the 64bit Blender build for Linux, which is currently still not published. I’ll put it online the moment I get word it’s ready and tested.

Further I have been drafting locally a setup for the developer documentation, on which I’ll be working in the coming time more. Expect some publications on the wiki (in the form of updated pages and new pages). A svn+git tutorial will be part of this, as I think it is a powerful way for non-committers to work on our source code and still be able to commit locally without much hassle.

Week 44 has been a bit depressing, with open bug reports over 200. It shows that we really need our active, dedicated bug fixing effort to handle all the reports. On the positive note, it means our users are actively trying to help improving Blender by submitting bug reports, which is a good thing too! Hopefully my short talk on bug reporting during the conference helped a bit.

As you can see, two days where we got more than we managed. We should be seeing better looking stats from Week 45 onwards again, though. As of this exact moment we have 223 reports open still. So lots of work to do.

Some stats generated today (so partly already Week 45 work, but still gives an indication of where we are):

So, a quick status update from last week. During the begin of the week I was busy with fixing up our installer script, so that it won’t delete everything without properly warning and so on. After that I did release log work, some SVN and tracker stats for the period Blender 2.54-Blender 2.55. On Thursday I travelled to the Netherlands or the Blender Conference 2010, so I haven’t been able to do much sensible on the bug tracker or related work. On next Tuesday I’ll probably will finally press the release button on 2.55. I hope the users can wait for a few more moments before they can download a new official release

During the conference I’ve been busy helping out speakers and having two short sessions myself too, with on Saturday one on bug reporting and feature proposals. I hope users now have a better picture of how they can be a part of our development process.

Today only a few numbers, as I need to make some small adjustments to be able to do sensible data gathering from the tracker since the new release, but that’ll have to wait for a few more days. Anyway, the useful numbers:

During last 24 hours 9 reports were closed
During last seven days 67 reports were closed, avg 9.57 per day
During last 30 days 396 reports were closed, avg 13.20 per day
During last 24 hours 9 new issues were reported
During last seven days 74 new issues were reported, avg 10.57 per day
During last 30 days 336 new issues were reported, avg 11.20 per day

So you see, in the last seven days slightly more bugs reported than we closed, but that’s mainly due to the fact that I’ve been concentrating a bit more on non-bugfixing tasks. That said, I’m sure we’ll be well below 200 again next week. (One can at least hope )

End of day 2, Blender Conference 2010. Two days full of talks and workshops, what a bustle and vibrant time. And being speaker assistance also a lot of running, talking to many people, connecting, this, that, quickly here, be in a minute with your, there, back again, double-check everything is ok, you’re good now? sure, right after this I’ll be there.

But it’s all a great time! It’s great to see so many people in one place, interested all in Blender and presenting their usage of Blender, their ideas they have, their needs, their visions. It’s clear that Blender is pretty widely used in the academic world, and in such a wide variety of disciplines.

The Suzanne Awards Festival was a great watch too. A great many entries in the socalled Selection-section: great entries, that were not eligable for participation, or the maker(s) didn’t want it to participate. And then the actual nominees. All in all high level of quality.

I most not forget to mention the huge 4K-screen that we have in the entrance hall. Scenes from Sintel rendered in the huge resolution, as well as stills from Big Buck Bunny rendered for the occasion. Such a huge resolution is pretty unforgiving though, clearly the bowl from which Sintel is drinking needs at least one more subdiv level added! But it looks impressive on the large screen.

I’m happy that I’ve been able to shortly talk to some people a bit more than the quick moments for help, and I’m looking forward to be in contact with as many of those people as possible. The conference is also just so full of potential for just about anything!

Anyway, enough rambling, I should start on the weekly report before a deserved nights rest. An extra hour of sleep even. Woohoo!

Last week I’ve been working on GHOST issues on Windows, fixing problems with modifier keys, some of them because I did some improper checks on what is used where. Shift+numpad keys are still a problem, but I’ll continue working on finding a solution for this.

COLLADA issues I moved to the todo list, because I need to concentrate on other issues (bugfixes, release logs, docs) too. If there are developers out there who want to contribute to our COLLADA code, I’ll be happy to coordinate their efforts, review their patches and apply them to our trunk.

Apart from bugfixing I did also some cleaning of the code, specifically GHOST and blenkernel are now warning free. We’ve enabled /WX and -Werror for these parts, so any warnings there should be caught pretty soon. Because not all developers work on all platforms it’ll mean an increased amount of “Does Not Compile” messages to our mailing list, but I think that’s OK.

As of this writing we’re on 195 open reports, with since 2.54 beta a total of 718 closed and 522 newly opened reports. As you can see, we do make progress still

Last week has been a bit of a hassle. Tuesday and wednesday I was out of development a lot, since I did some rebuilding of my ‘wardrobe’. I use an Ikea wardrobe to house my machines, but they stood there just as machines. Airflow was less than optimal, so I had to keep one door always open. I decided to do something about it. I removed the big plank in the middle and put a Elfa organiser system in place. I removed the casings from my computers and put the componenst into the organiser system. For cooling I got 4 large Noctua fans. The wardrobe is now much cooler, I can even leave the doors closed for long times. The system is not finished by a long shot. I still need to saw some good air vents at the top of the thing for outlet, and at the bottom for intake. Then install the fans properly, install silencer mats and so on. After that I’ve been working hard on getting back on track with time usage.

I’ve been working on COLLADA bugs that I thought would be quick to fix. It might have been quick, but I didn’t like the simple fixes, so I took time to devise a way for doing light export ‘properly’. I’ve been in contact with the author of Mitsuba renderer project (Jakob Wenzel) about the issue, and I think that the current way of doing export and import is now much better. Similar issues arise with camera export and import and so on – I continue working on them.

For Windows there was a difficult task in figuring out and fixing the problem of AltGr input in Text editor and Console editor.

Saturday I’ve added a simple version of the System Info script we used to have in 2.4x series. This can now be used by users to get good system info to be used in bug reports (the AltGr-problem became apparent when I tried scripting in Blender for this).

Last week I did 27 commits of which 7 were fixes. I closed 20 reports and I commented of a whole lot more.

Because of the AltGr-problem I put writing the graph scripts back (I use blender text editor exclusively for any Python 3.1.2 code, since it’s the only Python 3.1.2 interpreter I have on my system – ok, I admin, I do use gvim too when scripting in Blender), so the graphs look still unfinished, but here’s the pictures and numbers:

Another week draws to an end. Our bug fixing efforts are still on-going. I haven’t been too active on the tracker this week though. I’ve been busy preparing the COLLADA code to build on in the coming time for the slew of bug reports that have been opened for it. Everything was in two huge files, which made it quite hard to work properly with the code. So instead of just diving straight into the bug fixing mode, I decided to refactor it into a number of files. Some nasty surprises were lying around (functors outside of structs or classes), but in the end I think I nailed most of it. The refactor for that is about completed (the odd class still not done), but it should be good now for continuing work on the COLLADA bugs in our tracker.

Apart from this I updated and/or rebuilt a number of dependencies: OpenEXR and IlmBase (debug libraries), OpenCOLLADA (my two patches for it were accepted upstream) and I built lcms libraries, enabling lcms support for Windows in our CMake and SCons build systems. Today I also quickly enabled CXX_GUARDEDALLOC support through SCons, which was available only for CMake users before.

For OpenCOLLADA builders should be advised that current dependencies in lib/windows and lib/win64 mean that COLLADA support can be built only with compilers that have unordered_map and unordered_hash support (TR1). This means for MSVS 2008 that you’ll probably need the VC++ 2008 Feature Pack installed if you already haven’t. I think VC++ 2010 already has this, but I’m not sure, as I have only MSVS 2008 Professional. So for those who use the VC++ 2008 express version, I’m afraid that won’t work too well for building COLLADA support – I heard that installing the VC++ 2008 Feature Pack doesn’t work for it.

Numbers and graphs (due to COLLADA work I’ve not continued the work on the scripts as I promised previous week):

And another week has gone by, full of bug fixing and report tending. I closed over 30 reports of which 5 I fixed, the rest were either duplicates, todos or rejected. I fixed some unreported bugs too.

I cleaned out the trunk from the project files, and I fixed our CMake for Windows project files to properly copy the correct Python DLL and modules. For this I also committed the Python modules unpacked to our dependencies directories.

I enabled multilayer EXR files as textures.

I am slowly taking more ownership over our COLLADA code too. I fixed camera import and export and the odd crash that could happen when exporting uvlayers with image textures that didn’t have images set. I also fixed our COLLADA import to name the uvlayers as per <bind_vertex_input> semantic; for this I patched OpenCOLLADA and submitted the patch: here. The Windows libraries have been updated, Linux and OSX users need to patch themselves until committed. Test builds for Windows have been updated too, for that see the right sidebar.

I started changing yesterday the graph creation scripts, so until that’s done I now give just the numbers:

The rulers are far from completed, but having this functional integration ready I can start working on the really cool looking features for these rulers.

There are obviously already the manipulators, and they do help a lot in visualising what and how to edit objects. The rulers will greatly enhance that experience, giving nice anchors and direction for the transforms.

Think of grids, pies and ladders.

Just like previous week, I’ve been concentrating on bug fixing. Although we’re doing a lot of work in this area, user keep finding new issues and reporting them! (Which is a good thing of course). I’ve handled over 30 reports to some closed state (duplicate, todo, fixed, rejected), and more I had under my magnifier glass to get backtraces, or more info. Not much exciting info I guess (cool new features), but the numbers show clear progress. Day by day we get closer to the moment that we can say that Blender is stable. Not tomorrow, but who knows, maybe this year

And again, a day or two too late! I’ll just pretend that good things are worth waiting for.

Last week has again been full of bug fixing. Since much of the easy bugs has been handled, it is going to show in our closing speed as reports need more and more time to investigate and verify. That doesn’t mean we stop working of course, on the contrary. Last week I closed over 40 reports. This includes the reports that we mark as todo on our wiki todo list. A lot of time went also in investigating new (and old) reports and getting more information for those.

People have been asking me how we handle bug reports. For Blender 2.5x series we use the Blender 2.5 Bug Tracker (which is still behind log in) with bugs set to data type Blender 2.5 Bug Tracker.

In our tracker we have the following states for Resolution: None, New, Investigate, Ready (rare, prestage for Fixed), Approved, Rejected, Postponed (unused), Fixed, Duplicate and Todo.

When a new report is submitted the report is None, sometimes the user sets to New, either way is OK. The next step is for a dedicated developer to do a first assessment of the report. The idea of the triaging is that the developer tries to determine if it’s a valid report and if so, assign it to a developer who can handle the bug (code owner, module owner). The bug will be assigned and set to New, or if the triaging developer is certain, Approved. If a report is not valid, the report is marked Rejected and State is set to Closed. An invalid report is often:

misunderstanding of how a feature works

a user not aware of some feature

something that didn’t work like a user expected, but was designed or implemented in that way

Either the triaging or assigned developer can set Resolution to Investigate, although this is not often used by all developers. I like to put it on Investigate to signal the reporter and interested parties that the issue is being looked at. When a bug is fixed the assignee sets Resolution to Fixed and State to Closed. This we do mostly on basis of testing by developer, who might or might not have asked other developers to test. This depends on the complexity of the issue. Only if the reporter notices that an issue hasn’t been fixed properly is a Fixed and Closed report reopened.

If similar reports have been reported before it is marked as Duplicated and set their State to Closed. We try to put in comments of both the duplicate and original bug links to the other report, so all can be verified when a fix is found.

To help us manage the influx of bugs we’ve decided to keep in the bug tracker only reports that are actual bugs to our standards. A bug is something that is intended (code and design) to work, but doesn’t.

Reports can be marked also as Todo and moved to the todo wiki. In that case reports are closed too. Reports eligable for move are often related to features that haven’t been fully implemented (or at all). Also reports of recurring issues that we have trouble finding good solutions for in a short timespan can be moved to this todo page. An example is several OpenGL problems that can happen on some cards, but also some larger tasks that can take some time and need someone to sit down and actually do it. The todo list is for both old developers and for those who want to start working on Blender code. The bug tracker is a good place, of course, but our todo page will contain sections that can have links to the bug tracker, and are thus easier to oversee for developers. Right now the todo list is in many places just bunch of bullet lists, but I intend to write out more details for as many sections as possible in the coming time as part of my role for Development Support, along with coder documentation on what to do, how, where, etc.

The rules are not enforced, but it would be benificial if both users and developers followed the rules as much as possible. It’ll help me and others in handling the bugs and quickly respond to changes and new ones.

I hope this short overview helps users and developers in understanding how our process works.

Enough of the boring stuff, let’s have some diagrams and numbers of the current development progress:

I also worked on the release logs, reading through 5000 lines of svn log. With the imminent release of Blender 2.54 we’ll have a good basis to work from, both statistically and in terms of stabilizing and finalizing Blender, to pull out of the Beta stage.
